I myself have a medium brown hair color, and have been getting highlights for as long as I can remember. I go with a caramel color and a blonde shade. It gives great dimension to my hair. Since your hair is dark brown I would suggest you get two colours added to your hair. These would be a 2 shades of blonde and a auburn that you have your stylist put through out the hair.

I have natural dark brown hair as well. I usually do red, blond and light brown highlights through out all of my hair, not just on the top. Most brunettes have natural red highlights anyway if they stay out in the sun enough for the highlights to show up.

Just tell your stylist the color(s) you are thinking of for highlights, whether you want them on top or layered through your hair and then ask what their opinion is. Oh and make sure you ask how much its going to be. Layered cost more than on top because it takes longer usually.

I do my own at home over a period of two days with my highlighting materials and some foil. Thats always an option as well.
