Please, please, please just DON'T. It might look easy but it's not, and once you start you will likely just be frustrated an confused. Even professional hairdressers do NOT highlight their own hair, it would be like performing your own surgery. The chances of it looking good are slim. If you can't afford to go to a professional salon, find a beauty school in your area. It's a LOT cheaper, and with a teacher monitoring them they will be able to do a nice job.

Because if its brown and you apply blonde(bleach) to your hair as its lifting it won't go to blonde right away. You could turn a horrible shade of orange (I know, been there ;). If you can't afford to go to a salon to get the hilights perhaps you could try a beauty school and request a senior student. Or even look into some salons have lists for "hair models."
